FCA History

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes is touching millions of lives … one heart at a time. Since 1954, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes has been challenging coaches and athletes on the professional, college, high school, junior high and youth levels to use the powerful medium of athletics to impact the world for Jesus Christ. As the largest Christian sports ministry in America, FCA focuses on serving local communities by equipping, empowering and encouraging people to make a difference for Christ.

In the 1980's current FCA board members Larry Hoekman & Dana Nafzinger helped start a FCA huddle in Larry's home which is where the first seeds of this ministry were sown here on the central coast. In 2006 former Cal Poly baseball pitcher Dennis Leduc came on staff with FCA part time for six months working with some local coaches including Tony Ramos, Ed & Ginny Barnett and John Acevedo to name a few and two FCA huddles were born. With the help of former staff member Eric Carlson FCA went on to hire Cal Poly track and cross country alumni Luke Llamas to be the first full time FCA staff person on the central coast in 2007. Under Luke's leadership the ministry grew to include ten more campus huddles, multiple Fields of Faith outreaches, school wide assemblies and participation in FCA's local and international sports camps.

In 2010 Cal Poly grad Ryan Pahler joined the team and over the next couple years nine more schools were added including multiple middle school huddles. In 2011 through the vision of Greg Dickinson, Pat Cusack and other coaches and officials in the community the annual FCA All Star Football Classic can into being which has now raised over half a million dollars for local schools. The ministry continues to thrive with over 1,000 students and coaches involved every month from Paso Robles to Lompoc.

In 2011 through the vision of Greg Dickinson, Pat Cusack and other coaches and officials in the community the annual FCA All Star Football Classic came into being which has now raised over seven hundred and fifty thousand dollars for local schools.

We now have five staff serving in the ministry here on the central coast with the addition of our Area Reps Emily Pahler & Olivia Trudeau and Assistant International Coordinator Katie Llamas.
